i realise all the chinese organised crime implications of the word 'triad' are inconvenient, but seriously how on earth did a word as unaesthetic as 'throuple' become the more popular term for fully connected three-person polyamorous relationships

I was under the impression that "triad" was still the word for that, but then I make no particular attempt to keep up with the poly discourse.

I agree, "throuple" is pretty unaesthetic.

I have seen almost no use of triad in that sense for a long time while I just saw a news article use 'throuple' (which is what triggered this post)

the poly people i interact with are admittedly more of the 'we once tried to map out the polycule but available graphing software proved inadequate*' variety, and they don't focus that much on naming subsets of their graph. maybe most people who have cause to use the word have better taste than the mostly-not-poly people looking from the outside that I see using 'throuple'.


*true story, though the inadequacy was about inconvenience of use, not about not being able to handle the graph
