I may or may not have said this before but anyway
being a kid and reading translated-to-spanish books where they describe people as 'answering only in monosyllables' gave the impression that they meant 'saying only yes or no' because, as it happens, waaay fewer words in Spanish are monosyllabic than in English (and most of them are, like, articles or pronouns or otherwise not-really-plausible-as-a-single-word-answer)
