(no subject)
Nov. 10th, 2019 05:13 pmPeople trying to find a justification for why 'gif' is pronounced one way or another is just silly cause you know if any particular argument went the other way they'd still ignore it.
"Oh it stands for Graphic Interchange Format, graphic has a hard g". That's not how acronyms work and you know it. "It was meant to be pronounced 'jif' by the creators". Doesn't matter, the author is dead.
You are allowed to say "I like how it sounds better this way" and leave it at that. You might worry that such an inherently subjective argument will never convince the other side, and you'd be right, but none of the other arguments have either.
Learn to live in a world where sometimes people pronounce the word 'gif' in a way you dislike, because there's no objective truth to the matter and pretending that your reasons are truth-seeking rather than post hoc justification is a filthy lie.
