(no subject)

i wrote a whole post about how it doesn't matter that the fire in the amazon is getting less attention on social media than some other stuff that isn't really as important

i then deleted it, because i did not truly endorse it and to write something i am willing to stand behind i need a better mood than this

but the current ideas about moral obligations to spend attention on bad stuff going on in the world are dysfunctional and i wish i had the time and mental state to write a better post about that

I usually point people in the direction of In Praise of Passivity and The Case Against News, but I'm realizing that I never explicitly stated the connection between the two ideas and that that might explain why I've gotten so little traction with it.

I guess the news cycle is starting to move over into "this issue was poorly described"/"well actually, there are even more forest fires outside the amazon"/"the US&Europe treatment of this is colonialist"/... so I feel I really came out ahead by apathetically not reading up on the issue.
