i keep coming across people on the internet talking about how they had to pick a [language] name for a class on said language and it just sounds so weird. is that at all a common thing?

yeah it is.

i took a spanish class, and my irl first name is (already) a Spanish name, and not even an uncommon one at that. They made me pick a new one anyway.

We did it in my French class, but generally we were trying to find the closest in-language name to our birth name. People who wanted a wildly different name when a substitute existed got a lot of pushback from Madame [Redacted].
