general call for opinions: I am considering buying a console in the 3ds family. a cursory search suggests I can get a regular 3DS or a New 2DS for about the same amount of money, which is cheaper than a New 3DS. What are reasons one might prefer the latter? (assume I don't care about 3D and I only want to play main series pokemons)

If you only want to play main series pokemon games, I think the only thing the new 3ds has to offer you is a better framerate in xy and sumo.
